Graduate Program in Mining Engineering offers the following degree options...

Master of Engineering

The University of Utah has one of the few programs in the West offering a Master of Engineering (M.E.) degree. The M.E. is a non-thesis masters program especially suitable for mining engineers who wish to augment their technical knowledge. This is a terminal degree and does not qualify for continuing for the Ph.D.

Master of Science

Must meet Graduate School and Department requirements as outlined in the University of Utah General Bulletin and the Graduate School Bulletin. An individual program of study is designed for each student, providing an interdisciplinary program that is rigorous and challenging. Requires a research thesis.

Doctor of Philosophy

Must meet Graduate School and Department requirements as outlined in the University of Utah General Bulletin and the Graduate School Bulletin. An individual program of study is designed for each student, providing an interdisciplinary  program that is rigorous and challenging. Requires scholarly research and dissertation.

NOTE: The application process for Ph.D. program requires the GRE exam beLogo-Internal Photo Banktaken and if asked a telephone or in-person interveiw prior to acceptance into the program

All students holding an undergraduate degree in mining engineering are encouraged to apply. Information about the online application process can be access through the heading "Admissions" at the top of the page.The Graduate School requires applicants to have an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 (out of possible 4.0), based on all undergraduate work or work completed during the last two years of study, whichever is higher.

Areas of Research

Instruction and research are available in the following areas: rock mechanics, numerical and physical modeling, geotechnical instrumentation, methane drainage, computer applications, ore reserve estimation, mine automation and mine/mill integration, surface and underground mining methods (metal, coal and industrial minerals)
